Because of the web, opportunity doesn't rely on what you look like, where you live or how much money you have.

That is so amazing. Let's keep it that way.

Mission

The mission of Varvy is to provide opportunity and to inspire others to do the same.

Why are Varvy tools free?

Three reasons.

  • A book store
  • A dude I met in Puerto Rico
  • A sailboat

The book store

I grew up as a homeless kid in Portland Oregon. When I was twelve or so I used to go to Powell's book store and they wouldn't kick me out.

The only reason I know math, science and about folks like Plato is because they didn't kick me out of their store. They let me read.

They could have kicked me out. They had every right to. But they didn't.

They gave me opportunity.

The dude I met in Puerto Rico

I went to Puerto Rico later. I was totally broke. I met this dude who had an internet cafe (quite a rarity back then). He would let me use it for free. I spent all day learning and created my first website there.

He gave me opportunity.

The sailboat

I found out that the ocean doesn't charge rent.

Sounded like a good place.

I bought a sailboat for two thousand dollars from Ebay. It gave me a place to learn. I had learned much, but...

I needed to get really good at three things to be great on the web.

  • HTML, CSS and Javascript
  • Drawing programs (like Inkspace or Illustrator)
  • Programming (In my case PHP)

I knew if I had those three skills I would basically be unstoppable.

I got the sailboat in Puerto Rico, then went further south through the Caribbean using only the wind (the boat didn't have fancy stuff like a motor).

I would stop at an island and anchor in a bay and I would stay in that bay until I learned one skill, then move on to the next island or bay for the next skill.

I had a kindle, a solar panel, a tiny laptop, and a tiny sailboat.

I learned those skills and that sailboat gave me the place to do it and that was opportunity.

The core reason Varvy is free is because I believe in opportunity.

It bothers that most SEO tools and reputable web training costs so much.

They often charge like ninety-nine dollars a month to access their sites and use their tools and that just makes me mad. It makes me mad because there are so many people on earth who simply have no way to pay that.

A giant chunk of the world population would have to work a month or more to pay for just one month of those tools.

That is why Varvy exists.

That is why I don't charge anything.

That is why I don't stick popups in your face asking for your email or registration.

Keep pushing

I was homeless with only a fourth grade education and no computer when I started.

What ever your situation is I wish you the best possible outcome.

The mission of Varvy is to provide opportunity and to inspire others to do the same.

Because of the web, opportunity doesn't rely on what you look like, where you live or how much money you have.

That is so amazing. Let's keep it that way.
